Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat and add butter. Add onions and cook until caramelized, about 10-12 minutes.
  • Form ground beef into 4 patties, season with salt and pepper, and cook in a separate pan for 3-4 minutes per side until desired doneness.
  • Place a slice of cheese on each patty to melt.
  • Butter one side of each slice of rye bread.
  • Assemble each patty with onions between two slices of bread, butter side out.
  • Toast in the skillet over medium heat, cooking for 2-3 minutes per side until golden and crispy.
  • Slice and serve hot.

Notes

  • Substitute Swiss cheese with cheddar or American cheese for a different flavor.
  • Use sourdough or white bread if you prefer.
  • Caramelize onions ahead of time to save time on a busy night.
