Make the ultimate crispy fried cod fish sandwich at home! This easy seafood recipe features flaky cod fillets, crunchy golden breading, fresh slaw, and creamy tartar sauce, all stacked inside a soft bun. Perfect for lunch, dinner, or casual gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cod fillets (about 4-6 oz each)

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs

  • 1 teaspoon paprika

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • Vegetable oil for frying

  • 4 sandwich buns

  • 1 cup shredded cabbage (for slaw)

  • ¼ cup mayonnaise

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

  • 1 tablespoon pickle relish

  • Optional: sliced pickles, tomato, or lettuce

Instructions

  1. Prepare Slaw: In a bowl, mix shredded cabbage with mayonnaise, lemon juice, and pickle relish. Chill.

  2. Prepare Breading Stations: Place flour in one bowl, beaten eggs in another, and a mix of panko, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a third.

  3. Bread the Fish: Dredge cod fillets in flour, dip into eggs, then coat with seasoned panko.

  4. Fry the Cod: Heat oil in a skillet to 350°F (175°C). Fry fillets 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through.

  5. Assemble the Sandwich: Place fried cod on the bun, top with slaw, and add pickles or toppings of choice. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, marinate cod in buttermilk for 30 minutes before breading.

  • Use a thermometer to keep frying oil between 350°F–375°F.

  • Toast the buns for an even better sandwich experience.
