Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 8 slices of rye or sourdough bread
  • 4 slices of cheddar cheese
  • 4 slices of Swiss cheese
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise

Instructions

  • Form the ground beef into four patties and season with salt and pepper.
  • In a skillet, cook patties on medium heat until fully cooked, about 4-5 minutes per side.
  • In a separate pan, melt 1 tbsp butter and sauté the onions until caramelized, about 10 minutes.
  • Butter one side of each bread slice. Spread mayonnaise on the unbuttered side.
  • Place a slice of cheddar and Swiss cheese on each slice of bread. Add a cooked patty and caramelized onions on top.
  • Top with another slice of bread, buttered side facing out.
  • Cook the sandwich on a skillet over medium heat until golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add pickles or a slice of tomato to the melt.
  • Rye bread works well for its rich flavor, but sourdough can be a great alternative.
