Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F)

  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast

  • 1 tbsp sugar

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

  • 8 sticks of mozzarella cheese (string cheese)

  • ⅓ cup baking soda

  • 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)

  • Coarse sea salt for topping

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.

  2. Add melted butter, salt, and flour. Mix until dough forms.

  3. Knead dough for 5–7 minutes until smooth. Let it rise in a greased bowl, covered, for 30–45 minutes.

  4. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  5. Divide dough into 8 equal portions. Flatten each piece and wrap around one mozzarella stick, sealing the edges.

  6. Bring 8 cups of water to a boil. Add baking soda.

  7. Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds, then place on the prepared sheet.

  8. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse salt.

  9. Bake for 12–15 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm.

Notes

  • You can substitute string cheese with cubed mozzarella for a more gooey center.

  • Add garlic powder or Italian seasoning to the dough for extra flavor.

  • Serve with marinara sauce for dipping.
